I must admit...I really, really don't enjoy working with white-on-black. I'm not sure why, although I have a strong suspicion it's because of the lesser control the thicker pen affords me and the fact that my "white" pen more often writes in pale grey. Then there's the shading (er, highlighting)...don't even start on the shading. I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. ^_^
On a much more positive note...I love Fescu. LoveloveloveloveLOVE it. It's an amazing way to fill extra space if you need to...though I think I overdid it here ^_^ And that shading (er, highlighting) is just...painful. Bleh.
Enjoy and be (more so than me) inspired! ^_^

I don't usually like black tiles a whole lot either (I haven't done mine yet) but I love yours! Maybe the trick is to use a tangle that you love? I'll try that!
ReplyDeleteGreat work! And.. your shading is perfect!! Creating a shadow like you have is most effective.
ReplyDeleteI like the double image (shadow?) effect you achieved with the highlighting. Very nice tile.
ReplyDeleteI whined almost as much as you did about the difficulty of using white on black tangling tools. Having said that, you achieved a lot better control in your tile then I did. I hope someday I will be mature enough as a tangler to figure this out. :)

ReplyDeleteAs I look at everyone's white on black tiles, the more I love it. I love echoism in your tile.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to enjoy white on black more than I did but I would never have guessed you were unhappy with this. The shading/highlighting with the paler, fuzzier white is really delicate and soft. I love it.
ReplyDeleteYour tile is fabulous! Great job on shading!
ReplyDeleteare you kidding me! the shading is SO cool here. The fuzzier line of the pencil behind the bright, thicker line of the gel ink...it looks especially good behind that fishnet/dotted netting thing.
ReplyDeleteDaniel, I used to feel as you do, but I think you did a better job than I did at that stage in my thinking. Your tile looks great, and the shadow images are wonderful! That said, I find it helps me to forget that the pencil is there to add shadows and think of it more as adding highlight or glow. New thinking is hard, isn't it? But your work looks wonderful! Keep at it and soon you will forget why you were against black paper.
ReplyDeleteLovely tile! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!
ReplyDeleteSorry you are so hard on yourself. I like the tangles you used and especially like the highlighting/shading of Echoism. Like the shadow effect with Fescu. I agree it is a great tangle for embellishment.
ReplyDeleteYou're funny. I must say though, I do feel like I'm looking at something without my glasses. Ha! Ha! I think it was Tinker Tangles that said something about Speedball ink and a "dip" pen. You might find the info. helpful. (If I've remembered the name of the site correctly.)
ReplyDeleteYour tile creation reminds me of an underwater photo-plasmic creature. (not sure if that is a word...but it's the best I can do to describe the critter). I like it! Really nice creation!
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh with your comments. I love Fescu also! Great tile.
ReplyDeleteThis is very nice! Like you, I am not comfortable using gel on black tiles. I've only done a couple, so I kept mine really simple-just 2 tangles and no shading.
ReplyDeleteLove the shadow work!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a bumble bee! Wonderful! I'm with you when it comes to white on black, I just hate doing it! My problem isn't just the lack of control, but I cannot find a white pen that actually works other than my huge Pitt pen which would only work on billboard!
ReplyDeleteDaniel, I always like to read your blog and see what you have done for the challenges. Your white on black is very well done, to say the least. You seem to have some great control over the pen and I think it turned out very well. It's difficult to do white on black, I will admit, but I like the drama of it. I Nice work!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful aura'ing for the shading. Really lovely tile!
ReplyDeleteGreat composition. It has a great shape. Nice tangles too! Sarah.
